WaaZam is a networked video environment for people to build their own worlds and have shared experiences at a distance. Current video communication systems are not designed well to support social engagement through creative play. WaaZam is a system that tracks and composites users and objects from separate physical locations with digital media in the same virtual space. The platform supports collaborative creation of the environment offline and during live sessions. Our user study will examine how parents and children use the system over multiple sessions, the differences between traditional and composited video environments, the types of activities parents and children engage in, live and asynchronous customization, and the best means os supporting creative play to foster social engagement.
